Chat Me Up

This June
while driving
through the

Park in North
K
Dakota, we
paused to
look at a
large, yellow bird peering down
from a cottonwood hanging over
the road. I only glimpsed the
bright yellow chest and some
white around the eyes before
the bird flew. That kind of
frustrating observation might
have led to confusion if we had
not heard the strange noises
the bird made: ank ank wheep
wheep ugh ugh honk clang! It
was just as Norma Siebenheller
described in her species profile about the yellow-breasted
chat in the May/June ’ 10 issue!
We had another brief sighting
the next day. Because I had
read that article in your magazine (several times), I have
another bird for my life list!
